Geography Curriculum Statement

Intent

At Chaddleworth St Andrew’s and Shefford C.E. schools the intention of the Geography curriculum is to provoke and provide answers to questions about the natural and human aspects of the world. At our school the children are encouraged to develop a greater understanding and knowledge of the world, as well as their place in it. Geography is planned across the school in order to weave through a golden thread of knowledge about the world. This will start with the children's immediate locality in EYFS and KS1 moving outwards to Human and Physical knowledge of the United Kingdom and then further afield to the continents and different hot and cold climates around the world. Geography is an investigative subject and through the study of places, people and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes, we will equip pupils with geographical skills and knowledge.  By revisiting these areas of learning regularly, children will remember more, know more and understand more.

Implementation

Geography is taught in blocks throughout the year.  Teachers identify the key knowledge and skills for each topic and consideration has been given to ensure progression each year across the school, on a two-year cycle due to mixed age classes. At the beginning of each theme, children are able to convey what they know already and what they would like to find out. Children are encouraged to explore and ask questions. This is then revisited at the end of the theme/term. Consideration is given to every child’s personal starting point and how every pupil can develop their own knowledge, skills and understanding.  Cross curricular links are made as much as possible.  Outdoor learning, class trips and the local area is utilised to enable children to base their learning on first hand experiences that enhance teaching and learning.

 Impact

By the time children leave our school they will:

· Have an excellent knowledge of where places are and what they are like

· Have an excellent understanding of the ways in which places are interdependent and interconnected and how much human and physical environments are interrelated

· Have an extensive base of geographical knowledge and vocabulary

· Be fluent in complex, geographical enquiry and the ability to apply questioning skills and use effective analytical and presentational techniques

· Have carried out geographical enquiries and reviewed findings

· Have a passion for and commitment to the subject, and a real sense of curiosity to find out about the world and the people who live there

At Chaddleworth St Andrew’s and Shefford schools we want to ensure that children are equipped with geographical skills and knowledge that will provide them with a range of transferable skills which they can apply to other subjects and contexts as they move to their next stage of education and future life. We want the children to have thoroughly enjoyed learning about geography, therefore encouraging them to undertake new life experiences now and in the future and to recognise the impact they have on the future of the planet.
